How to link to a file or web site in the Notes field of Life Balance

Recently we've had a number of people write in to ask if you can link a file to the notes field of Life Balance. Yes, you can link to a document, or a web page, or even a "mailto" link.

You can use these 7 steps within Life Balance too...

Jeff Liberti coaches his clients to adopt new behaviors. He recently wrote an article, 7 steps to New Behaviors, for motivating clients to make positive changes in their lives. In the article, he recommends techniques for breaking projects down into tasks, reevaluating and rewarding progress, journalling, and for establishing a realistic timeframe. However, there is no reason why you can't make use of these tips within the context of Life Balance too.

You'll notice that he advises you to "chunk it down." In other words, break a big project up into bite size tasks. This could mean specific little tasks that you need to do, budgeting your time, or watching your current behavior. In Life Balance this is the process you go through in your Outline. You break your top level goals into mid size projects or milestones, and then break those up into tasks that you can accomplish in one sitting.

Try using the notes section of Life Balance for some quick journalling, with a task to remind yourself to do it. Or look to the accomplishments list to see all the things that you have got done. I have a recurring task for journalling two things that I was grateful for or particular enjoyed doing during the day. It is helpful to look back at that when I run into an obstacle, or need a lift. Every so often I copy that list out to a bigger file, but capturing those quick journal entries right there in the notes for the recurring task works surprisingly well, since I don't even need to leave the app to do it.

Every so often, look through your Outline and the Desired pie chart to see if you need to make adjustments to your expectations. You may find that some projects have shifted in importance, or your time needs to be apportioned differently due to changing circumstances. In Life Balance this is easy to do, and the effects on your to do list view can help you stay on track.

Also, keep in mind that a new habit takes some time to establish, there is evidence to say that a new habit takes 21 to 28 days. However, remember that you will not learn to master playing the piano in 28 days, even if you do begin to establish a strong pattern of practice and learning in that amount of time. Understand that some goals are lifelong pursuits that could take many years to accomplish. Some goals are never really "checked off," so be sure to enjoy the process as well as the results.

Thank You

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I just want to chime in with our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has become part of our Life Balance family picture over the years — Customers, clients, business partners, friends, family and those who cheerfully participate in helping us keep Llamagraphics interesting.

Every day, like all of you, we face lots of ongoing challenges: technical, business, personal. Everybody has more to do than ever, and life is full of stresses, complications, and crazy busy days. Burn out serves nobody well. We believe in balancing those challenges with healthy doses of rest, self care, and fun to be able to stay sharp, effective and cheerful.

Your success stories, suggestions and enthusiastic support for what Life Balance is all about are what makes it worth while. We love hearing from you. It's amazing to hear about your plans and life's goals. We believe in YOU, and all that you do for those close to you and for the world! We believe that is something worth celebrating along with a slice of pie!

In Life Balance, that slice could be taken from the Actual pie chart from the Balance view! or maybe, how about some pumpkin pie with real whipped cream?! Hmm... I look forward to both of those!

The story on the MobileMe calendar update

On October 14, Apple released an update to the MobileMe calendar that changes how iCal communicates with MobileMe. In the process, they removed synchronization between iCal and Sync Services. The result is that after the update, Life Balance no longer synchronizes to iCal.

Phasing out Palm OS conduit support in Life Balance

We believe that the time has come for us to phase out the Palm OS conduits from Life Balance.

We've really enjoyed developing for Palm OS. It represents many years of our work and we're a little reluctant to let it go. Palm essentially rescued us from the demise of the Apple Newton Messagepad, and over the years we've made great friends with other Palm OS developers both within and outside of Palm. We plan to keep the friendships, and let go of the code.

Palm has transitioned from Palm OS to Web OS. The last update to the Conduit Developer's Kit (CDK) was in 2004. On Macintosh, it was 2002. On both platforms, other development tools have evolved to the point where they are increasingly incompatible with the Palm OS CDK. We've worked hard to maintain backward compatibility with Palm OS to support our large installed base of customers, but now this compatibility is interfering with our ability to move forward.

Life Balance for iOS4, recent updates and development

Life Balance for iPhone has been updated for iOS4. Among the new features we added is "fast application switching." The advantage is when you get interupted by a phone call, any sync operation that is in progress will complete in the background. Another new feature in the recent update is that from the Task Details view, you can navigate either to the Outline or To Do list views. There is a new Outline button at the top right of the task details view that navigates to the task in the outline.

Glowing in the Dark... observations from our iPad Development of Life Balance

Stuart and I have had our iPad now since the first day it was sold by Apple. As developers we stood in line to pick up our reserved device at our local Apple Store about one month ago. The new iPad 3G is now released, one month later, and it is also apparently off to a great start.

We are adapting our Life Balance app to run on the iPad, and it is an interesting process. We are playing with some of the existing apps to get a sense of what works and what doesn't.

One thing is clear, the iPad is not just a big screen iTouch and it is not a flat tablet Powerbook either. It is its own thing.

It has its own quirks, strengths and patterns of use.

The iPad really does video and sound very well. It is pleasant to watch a movie, or a TV episode on it. I don't watch a lot of TV. I am just not a couch potato. When time comes for television viewing, I usually get up and move around and putter, and do other stuff. Nevertheless, I have been watching the series, "Castle" on the iPad. I am not sure why, exactly. I am certain that it goes beyond the obvious reason that Nathan Fillian is ruggedly handsome, and I am sentimental about Firefly.

I am watching the iPad, or listening to radio in some new circumstances. For instance, I was surprised to notice that I was watching the ABC series, from their iPad App as I brush my teeth?!! One major difference is that the iPad can follow me around the house, rather than me sitting on the sofa, and the screen is still large enough to be viewed at a comfortable distance. I do not feel that there is in any danger of it falling in the sink, and my hands are free.

After a month using the iPad, I find that it reminds me of the little beige transistor radio with the pull up antenna and the string wrist strap that I used to climb trees with as a kid. Over the weekend, we set the iPad up in a friend's kitchen to play some tunes as we chopped fruit and veggies for a shared meal, and like some high tech and yet still primal campfire, we all started to sing along. I can totally imagine hanging out in the hammock with the iPad. It is strange to think of the iPad as the book you read in a tent in the backyard as the other kind of fireflies drift by with their friendly yellow glow. At least the iPad comes with its own flashlight if you want to read under the covers.

For Life Balance, I think this means that people might use our software when they are more relaxed, open to new ideas and in more casual settings. Using the device ourselves influences our design decisions as we continue our work to release our App on the iPad. There is only so much we can learn from a simulation. Our customers might find themselves doing more of their personal planning in their shorts and flip flops, rather than in neckties and suits. That might be very pleasant too.
